A Brief History and Introduction: I, Amanda Lynne Jahnke am so entranced with motherhood . . . . It keeps calling on me to be better, to bring forth my authentic self and deepen my understanding of humanity and our relationships to each other and to our essential home, the Earth. To be at home with my girls until now has been a privilege and I have been trying to figure out how I can prolong the blessing and the magic. Previously, I was inspired to start a forest preschool from our forested home, but realistically my children are still too young to facilitate that whilst parenting and maintaining an off-grid lifestyle. Providing a rich and nurturing environment for a tribe of little people to grow into themselves is a dream I have had for a long time and I am excited about our recent move from the woods into Kingston to manifest this dream from here. I am currently enrolled in Continuing Education with LifeWays North America, which takes its inspiration from Rudolf Steiner, founder of Waldorf Education, and develops home as the model and life as the curriculum for young children from birth to six (see below). This, with my passion for outdoor experiential education and sustainability, gardening, and multi-disciplinary arts creates our home values and foundations.
My approach is unconventional. I don't have activities set out for each day; I don't follow the clock; I tend to step back and observe instead of leading or interfering: I trust the emergence of childhood and am there to hold hands.
As a parent and as a caregiver I am:
* feeling called more and more to hold space OUTDOORS for the kids to be free to be themselves - their impressions of life and their expressions of learning and social skills and resourcefullness and creativity
* allowing their individual and collective interests to arise
* anticipating their needs
* setting firm boundaries
* being a loving hug, guide and mentor.
"follow your children,
Together you will learn to
pay attention; how to kneel
down in the grass; how to be
idle and blessed; how to stroll
through the field; how to lead
a wild and precious life."

Our home is minimalistic; free from commercial/media/pop culture influences and infused with a funky yet soft palette of colours and materials made from natural fibers. The Little Yellow House has a large, open backyard with an old horse chestnut tree and ample stumps, logs and sticks to play and build with. There is a diverse variety of tree species surrounding the yard, and we have raised beds in our Children’s Garden and a mud hole that continues to grow and fill with rain water. We are across from Rideau Public School and near to the Loving Spoonful Community Garden, Churchill Park (rocks and trees), Elder Park (play structure and swings) and we are looking forward to ‘garden field trips’ to Oak St. Community Garden, who have invited us to come help and play there once a week, with the potential of helping to build an outdoor pizza oven!
Details/Cost: The Little Yellow House opened its doors March, 2018 to wee folk and their parents. My two daughters, Prairie and Grace, ages 31/2 and 5 acquiesced to sharing their cats, toys, dolls, train set and art supplies to new friends coming in to play!
If you are interested in top quality home education/ care for your wee one(s), please give me a call at 343 363 8447 and we can arrange a day and time for you and your child(ren) to come for tea and cookies and get a sense and a feel for the space. The cost is based on $50/full day or $10/hr, paid at the beginning of each month. No refunds for missed days. Some barter arrangements/energy exchange and sibling discount opportunities available upon request.
The Little Yellow House is for families who don’t feel comfortable leaving their children in a large daycare centre, or going to school 5 days /week. For families who are not fortunate to have retired in-laws in town! Families who want to know their children are feeling safe, honoured and confident in a small group in a beautiful, comfortable home. Families who feel relieved to know their child is preparing and eating homemade, local, nutrition dense foods. Families who ARE fortunate to be able to pay for quality, hard to find, alternative education and childcare. Families who like the idea of children of naturally mixed-ages intermingling in an outdoor and home setting.
As with all forest home school programs, we strive to create a compassionate and inclusive social environment which means that everyone is always looking out for and taking care of one another. Everyone is included in our work and play and no one gets left behind.
